- While I have trained my own dogs for about 12 years, I began to get more serious about dog training about 4 years ago. After taking many classes at the Kalamazoo Dog Training Club, I decided to do competition obedience. I began individual lessons, joined the club, and began assisting in classes. My yellow lab, Bell, and I earned the entry level companion dog titles in both AKC and UKC (and took home some blue ribbons in the Novice A ring too). Then shortly after we got, Frosty, our young black lab--I "crossed over" to clicker training. Clicker training is particularly strong in making the dog an active, thinking part of the training process. A well trained clicker dog will offer behaviors in an attempt to get it right and earn the click followed by a primary reinforcement. I love that energy and enthusiam from the dog and am hooked on clicker training. As I learn these methods, I am glad to have the opportunity to share them in some clicker training classes and to promote clicker training in southwest Michigan at this blog site.
